This morning was the Shelley Mialki Memorial 5K race. I showed up at Sunset Lane Park to pick up my packet at around 7:30 AM, and the weather was a cool 70 degrees with low humidity and a breeze. A little before 8 AM, the starting line formed a bit up the street and we were off.

The course was a loop through the roads of West Manchester Township ending up back in the park. The first half mile was all downhill, but from then on it was basically uphill for the rest of the way. Definitely the toughest course I’ve run to date, with far more hills than the Double Creek.
The last mile included a cool single-lane footbridge over some muddy areas which was fun, but then it was another long hill to the three mile mark, and then back downhill for the last tenth.

I tried my best to run strong down the final hill and across the finish line…

My official time on the board was 26:48, placing 139 out of 189 finishers. That’s another PR for me; over a minute faster than my previous 27:51 at Gettysburg last month.
According to my Garmin Forerunner, I covered 3.10 miles in 26:47 (8:39/mi pace) with an average speed of 6.9 mph and a max of 9.8 mph. My 1-mile splits were 8:10, 8:51, and 8:59. Burned somewhere around 475 calories.

Check it out…

Good race today. :)
Update: They posted some photos on the York Hospital Running Series website, including a decent one of me. Cool!
Congrats on hitting a new PR, especially on such a hilly course.
Hey, thanks Bill!
Good work John. I think you should have worn the shirt from Gettysburg though. You need a technical shirt like that to keep from catching on fire out there…because you are fast, and that was easy.
