Google Trends

Google Trends lets you look at search query and news trends for keywords.

I was actually doing something similar to this using a little Python script and Cacti. I still like my method better, as it gives actual numbers, but Google’s interface is pretty cool.

Vonage going public

So Vonage has “filed to raise $250 million in an initial public offering and named a new CEO,” according to The Street (via Slashdot). But there’s this problematic little detail in the prospectus:

While our revenues have grown rapidly, we have experienced increasing net losses, primarily driven by our increase in marketing expenses. From the period of inception through Sept.30, 2005, our cumulative net loss was $310.0million.

Um, 1999 called. They’d like their IPO back.

Cellular egg cooking

There was an article linked from Slashdot today called Weekend Eating: Mobile Cooking. In it Suzzanna Decantworthy describes how to use two mobile phones to cook an egg, and the link seems to be making the rounds on weblogs and IRC.

Now, yes, I know that the original article was just intended as a joke and just for fun. But my engineering side sometimes gets the better of me, and I want to take a look at some rough numbers to ask… well, is it even close to possible?

So here’s my attempt to wave my hands and scribble some caclulations on the back of a napkin to see if you can indeed boil an egg with your cell phone…
